Tech Manufacturing, a long-time manufacturer of machined metal parts for aerospace clients such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Bombardier, needed to raise production capacity and reduce lead times for their clients’ largest and most urgent orders. With their 5-axis CNC machines already running 24 hours a day up to 7 days a week, Jerry Halley, Chief Engineer at Tech Manufacturing, looked towards smarter operation and real-time performance data to increase the productivity and useful life of their existing machines.

With the Industrial Internet of Things (Industrial IoT) trend, semiconductor manufacturers have started adding big data acquisition and analysis into their centralized automation management systems in order to improve production efficiency. Moxa’s reliable networking infrastructure has enabled one system integrator, ArchCyber Technology, to build a real-time dry pump monitoring system that optimizes efficiency and reduces total production costs by at least US$30 million per year.

Moxa was asked to provide a connectivity solution for one of the world's leading cosmetics companies. This multinational corporation, with retail presence in 130 countries, 23 global braches, and over 66,000 employees, sought to improve the efficiency of their production process by migrating from manual monitoring to an automatic productivity monitoring system. The production line was being monitored by ABB Real-TPI, a factory information system that offers data collection and analysis to improve plant efficiency. Due to software limitations, the customer needed an OPC server and a corresponding I/O solution to collect data from additional sensor devices for the Real-TPI system. The goal is to enable the factory information system to more thoroughly collect data from every corner of the production line. This will improve its ability to measure Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and translate into increased production efficiencies.

One of our customers, a leading provider of turnkey material handling systems in the US, provides automated conveyors and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to large factories that produce corrugated, folding cartons, and bottles and cans. Their key requirement is building a highly reliable system to ensure nonstop plant operation.
In this project, the industry leading Allen-Bradley EtherNet/IP programmable logic controller (PLC) was used for control systems, but they also selected Moxa’s industrial Ethernet switches to build two reliable industrial networks to implement their automated material handling systems.

Many Automated Materials Handling (AMH) systems have been implemented in factories to increase productivity. AGV is a common AMH system used in factory logistics to enhance operational accuracy and efficiency. One of our customers in Asia, who provides logistics services, wanted to deploy AGV systems in warehouses. Their aim was to provide real-time goods delivery so that their customers could achieve zero inventories in retail stores.
